Coordinate error

[edit]

{{geodata-check}}

The following coordinate fixes are needed for USS Long Beach. Photos clearly show the ship is NOT at the coordinates shown.

@Mountshadow: see comment on your tp regarding this issue. Thanks - wolf 06:17, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the coordinates and the mentions of the ship's continued existence from the article. Deor (talk) 17:02, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

'Last Cruiser Hull'

[edit]

I have tried to tame the claim made in this section of the opening, as it clearly needed verification and I've tried to create a 'certain point of view' work-around. But it still might be unacceptable and weasel-worded, so revert away if necessary. Personally, I'm not all that happy with the edit.

The reason for this is that, frankly, the claim makes no real sense:

Long Beach had a hull with a LBR of over 10:1, like a destroyer, and a pronounced knuckle at the bow, unlike either a WW2 destroyer or a WW2 cruiser of the Cleveland or Baltimore classes (which also had LBRs of just less than 10:1).

All the succeeding 'destroyer leaders', 'frigates' and so on were of much larger (and very different) type to WW2 destroyers, while Long beach did not typify the WW2 cruiser hull-form, so really I don't understand what this whole "last cruiser hull in the USN" is actually all about?

Perhaps this is actually an element ripe for deletion, since it seems to be very conjectural or just based on opinion. 2A00:23C7:3119:AD01:F5FA:9036:757D:DC83 (talk) 18:09, 2 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That specific sentence has been tagged as needing a source, and the article as whole is tagged as well. - wolf 02:08, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

JFK Guns Story

[edit]

Per this 2025-03 Facebook post by the Navy General Board, the story that President John F. Kennedy had the guns added is not true. fb post by Navy General Board

Another view of the nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser USS Long Beach (CGN-9), this time an overhead view as she cruises at sea on 21 June 1989.

This photo better shows the location of the two single mounts for the 5"/38 naval guns. These guns were carried in Mark 30 mounts, the same mount used by the Fletcher class destroyer of the Second World War!

The US Navy had been a little over zealous in adopting to missiles on their previous cruiser designs, removing the gun armament entirely in favor of missiles. Unfortunately there several tests during the 1960s where missiles failed to fire. This led to 5" guns being refitted to older guided-missile cruisers as an emergency measure. Long Beach was also fitted with two 5" guns as a part of this process.

A popular story often gets passed around that it was President John F Kennedy who suggested the addition of the guns, either due to a suggestion that Long Beach looked "under-gunned" or based on his experiences during World War 2. However, the decision to fit these guns seems to have been directly influenced by the previously mentioned missile failures.

Couldn't both be true? - \\'cԼF 02:28, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
